Square images work best (e.g., 512×512 PNG)
What is a favicon?
A favicon (short for "favorites icon") is the tiny image shown in browser tabs, bookmarks, and mobile home screens. It's your site's smallest — but most visible — brand asset.
What FileFlex generates
- favicon-16x16.png — browser tab icons
- favicon-32x32.png — high-DPI browser tabs and taskbar
- favicon-48x48.png — Windows shortcuts
- apple-touch-icon.png (180×180) — iOS home screen
- android-chrome-192x192.png — Android home screen
- android-chrome-512x512.png — PWA splash screens
How to install your favicons
Upload all the PNG files to the root of your website. Then paste these tags into the <head> of every HTML page:
<link rel="icon" type="image/png" sizes="32x32" href="/favicon-32x32.png">
<link rel="icon" type="image/png" sizes="16x16" href="/favicon-16x16.png">
<link rel="apple-touch-icon" sizes="180x180" href="/apple-touch-icon.png">
Favicon best practices
- Use a square image — non-square images get cropped
- Start with at least 512×512 source resolution for crisp high-DPI output
- Keep the design simple — favicons are often displayed at 16×16
- Use transparent background (PNG) so it works on light and dark browser themes
Frequently asked questions
Does FileFlex generate .ico files?
FileFlex generates PNG favicons, which are supported by all modern browsers. For legacy .ico files, you can use additional tools — but PNG favicons alone are sufficient for 99% of sites today.
Is my image uploaded?
No. All processing happens in your browser using HTML5 Canvas. Your image never leaves your device.
Where do I put the favicon files?
In the root directory of your website (same place as your index.html). Then add the link tags shown above to your HTML.
Why do I need multiple sizes?
Different contexts display favicons at different sizes: browser tabs use 16 or 32, bookmarks use 48, Apple devices use 180, and Android uses 192/512. Providing all sizes ensures a crisp icon everywhere.
